A New System Emerges…

I can only imagine the weight of the responsibility felt by the founding fathers of the United States when they came together in the old Pennsylvania Statehouse in May of 1787. This congregation would later be known as the Constitutional Convention, as it marked the birthplace of the constitution and modern-day American democracy. Particularly, I am fascinated by what must’ve been going through the minds of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, two men who had come to the convention with unique, bold, and clear intentions.

From the 55 delegates who attended the convention, most came expecting to deliberate on ways of improving the existing Articles of Confederation. Drafted 11 years earlier by 13 appointees of the Continental Congress, the articles set off to be the first frame of government for the 13 original states of the United States.

In hindsight, the Articles of Confederation were far from a sustainable, long-term government system. Albeit being heavily debated before approval, the articles seemed more like a provisional fix rather than a carefully deliberated governmental foundation. They were drafted in 1776, just one year after the onset of the American Revolutionary War, as the 13 colonies scrambled to formalize a way of collaborating against Great Britain and legitimizing the operations of the Continental Congress.

Led by Madison and Hamilton, some delegates attending the Constitutional Convention came decided to persuade their peers to throw out the Articles of Confederation in favor of an entirely new form of government.

The sheer boldness of this act takes me back to my original question: what was going through their minds? Did they know the responsibility they carried? Were they aware of the historical significance of what they were about to do? Could they fathom the impact those deliberations would have not only in the United States but in so many societies across the world for years to come?
